Wooster Square Cherry Blossom History

Wooster Square's Cherry Blossoms have been celebrated each spring since 1973, when 72 Yoshino Japanese Cherry Blossom Trees were planted by the New Haven Historic Commission in collaboration with the New Haven Parks Department and Wooster Square neighborhood residents. The Celebration attracts thousands to Wooster Square, and includes food vendors and local musicians. Since that time neighbors have held annual Festivals to celebrate their beauty. In fact, 2023 will be the 50th anniversary year!

When do the cherry trees bloom?

They have often survived the March snow! We now have the Cherry Blossom Blog to appraise us of the blooming process and timing – with photos added daily in the spring.

When did the current Cherry Blossom format begin?

In 2020 and 2021, the Cherry Blossom Festival took a two-year COVID-related hiatus to return as the Cherry Blossom Celebration with diverse local music, food trucks and food carts surrounding the park. Thousands of visitors were welcomed to picnic throughout the park and listen to energizing music!

The Cherry Blossom Celebration will return on April 16, 2023, for its 50th Anniversary! The Celebration is sponsored by the Historic Wooster Square Association and the Wooster Square Conservancy, with support from the City of New Haven Department of Arts, Culture and Tourism and many generous local businesses, organizations, and friends of Wooster Square.

Please check the Cherry Blossom Celebration event page for more updates on the 2023 Cherry Blossom Celebration 50th Anniversary as the date gets closer.
