HISTORIC WOOSTER SQUARE ASSOCIATION's ANNUAL MEETING on Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at Conte School Library was attended by about 30 people, who enjoyed an informative and lively presentation by architect, historic New Haven tour guide, and architectural historian Colin Caplan. He gave a
fascinating, very well illustrated talk on the history and future of the Wooster Square
neighborhood. Most of the
illustrations came from his own collection to which he has devoted much
effort. Fortunately, there is
continuing access to many of his pictures in the “Historic Images” section of
his website www.magrissoforte.com. He noted buildings that were gone, that
had been preserved, and that had been altered. Many of us did not know that Court Street, built all at one time in the late 1890s, was originally called Home Place! Colin also had copies of his books available for purchase and
signing.
After Colin’s presentation, Max Piana and Chris Ozyck of the
Urban Resources Initiative program of the Yale School of Forestry and
Enviromental Studies recounted their study of the cherry trees around Wooster
Square done last year (and available on the publications section of the URI
website as Working Paper 51. Piana,
M. and Ozyck, C. "Wooster Square Park Cherry Tree Management Plan."
March 2011), crediting the map that Cordalie Benoit provided them. They went on to talk about their plans
for planting new trees this year, replacing four cherry trees, one on each side
of the park, and three interior trees.
Chris explained the rationale for taking down and replacing trees. He also emphasized the need for real
community support in maintaining the trees.
The evening included the HWSA Presidents' report on activities of hte past year, notably the Cherry Blosom Festival and the annual Holiday Tree lighting in the Park, Treasurer's report, and election of the Directors of the HWSA Board. posted 1/25/12

WOOSTER SQUARE COLLABORATES WITH URBAN RESOURCES INITIATIVE
More specifically, the neighborhood had a great new intern from URI (Urban Resources Initiative),
which is affiliated with the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental
Studies. The 2011 park maintenance season got a lot done in Russo Park.
Along
the easterly boundary, we replaced arborvitae and other plants damaged
by the heavy snow. We also cleaned and mulched the planting beds laid
out in the five or six previous years we've been working at Russo.
Other projects were completed with help from the Parks Dept. and the
City.
As in the past, URI supplied all the plants and tools.
